There is a restaurant fairly close to my house that I had walked by many times but never went in.  Last year a developer built two really cool spaces on 5th Ave and two restaurants moved in.  One is a breakfast restaurant, the other is lunch and dinner – D Bar.

At first I did not think that D bar was long for this world.  Always empty and kind of a cold and uninviting appearance as you walked by.  But finally Tim, a friend, and I went there for dinner.  Ugh, there was a giant fluorescent light over a prep area inside the dining area and it gave most of the restaurant a sickening, over lit, unappealing appearance.

As fate would have it, the owner of the Restaurant walked by while we were eating.  We praised the food but I had to tell him what I thought about the lighting.  Surprisingly, he seemed to pay attention and even agreed but I figured that would go nowhere.  I’ve given advice many, many times and most people are too arrogant to take it.  This owner was different.

Tim and I went back there last night and the first and most obvious thing I noticed was the ugly light was turned off.  Then I noticed that each table had a small candle on it.  I told Tim that I was pretty sure I had discussed how barren the table tops were with the owner and the waitress confirmed that the candles were new.

So, I’m shocked stupid that somebody actually paid attention to me.  Then we had dinner.  YUM.  It’s Restaurant Week and, I have to say, they knocked it out of the park with their selections.  Tim and I gorged ourselves and brought food home.  I NEVER bring food home.  It was that good.  In fact, it was sooooo good that Tim took pictures of some of our dishes and Tweeted them out to his sizable following.

D Bar is now a recommended place to go – just be ready to open our wallet.  It’s not cheap but it’s worth trying.

Pictured here is the Avocado Salad and one of the desserts.  Not pictured is a brilliant idea I’ve not seen before; Cocktail Flights.  You get 3 drinks and it was actually a fair bit of drinking.  It was fun.

The restaurant was buzzing and the small changes they had made in the lighting were HUGE.  Check it out!
